Self Reflection on Rotation 3 Emergency Medicine

I really enjoyed my emergency medicine rotation at New York Presbyterian Queens, and I feel like I got a lot of hands-on experience here. At this rotation the shift in the emergency department were split into different sections such as pediatrics, fast track, and the main emergency department. The pediatric emergency department was like the one on my pediatric rotation and I felt very familiar and comfortable in this environment. When I was scheduled in the fast-track section, I found that it was very similar to urgent care and I was able to do a lot of procedures such as vaginal exams, rectal exams, staples, sutures, fluorescein dye exams, casting, and measuring eyes with a tonometer. In the main emergency department is where I saw sicker patients with things such as MI’s, kidney stones, cholecystitis, sepsis, and strokes. When I was here, I was not able to do many hands-on stuff other than placing lines and drawing blood. Overall, my rotation was amazing I got to learn a lot while also being able to “get my hands dirty”. The staff was also very friendly and created a warm welcoming environment while also making sure I walked away with more knowledge than I came into the rotation with.
